Elliott Wilson is tired of artists invading the industry that he’s made a living off of for decades.
During a recent appearance on the “New Rory & Mal” podcast, Wilson expressed his frustrations, proclaiming, “Everybody is media. Summer Walker is media. Cam’ron is running around like he’s Stephen A. Smith. It’s what we’re doing.”
He later added, “This is the s**t I do well and now everybody wants to do it. I don’t like it... This is the s**t I do well and now everybody wants to do it. I don’t like it... Celebrities have access to things I may not have. I feel like they underperform.”
Unsurprisingly, Cam’ron’s show, “It Is What It Is,” caught wind of what Wilson said and had aggressive words for Wilson in multiple posts on Instagram.
One post read, “HEY YO @elliottwilson YOU WASHED & NOBODY IS CHECKING FOR YOU, #WETHENEWSOURCE GET USE TO IT YOU A BONA FIDE HATER AT IT’s FINEST, YALL #SWIPELEFT CAUSE THIS HIGH YELLOW [ninja emoji] SOUNDED LIKE THE ILLEST [ninja emoji] FROM NEBRASKA.”
Despite the harsh words from Cam’ron’s show, Wilson didn’t take the responses personally, writing on his IG profile, “OK y’all won. SMH. Ha!”
Wilson is a career journalist who has been in the industry for more than 30 years. He’s written for several publications and was at one point the editor-in-chief of XXL magazine. He’s interviewed several high-profile artists that most journalists could only dream of speaking to including Jay-Z, Drake, and Nipsey Hussle.
In other words, it’s not new for him to experience backlash from a particular artist and their fanbase.
In June, during an appearance on “The Joe Budden Podcast,” the veteran hip-hop journalist revealed that his relationship with Drake changed after his rap battle with Kendrick Lamar and shared that the 6 God was paranoid about his relationship with the Compton MC.
Wilson explained during the interview, “So when he dropped ‘Family Matters,’ I was like, ‘Yo you dropping this tonight?’ He hit me back like, ‘Yeah, yeah, whatever lol,’ and then he sent me a rat emoji.”
He later shared that Drake blocked him on social media and was warned to not visit Toronto anytime soon.
