The cancellation of “Ebro In The Morning” has sent ripples through the hip hop community over the past few days. For many listeners, the news came as both shocking and disappointing, though the hosts themselves say they sensed it coming. In the days after their final broadcast on Friday, December 12, both Ebro and Laura have offered small hints about what may have contributed to the show coming to an end.
One example came from Laura Stylez, who suggested that the work environment was far from ideal. According to Complex, a social media user responded to the situation by claiming the team had been hosting the show remotely for the past five years and were essentially “mailing it in.”
Laura Stylez pushed back directly in the comments, rejecting the idea that the trio lacked effort. At the same time, she explained one of the reasons they were not physically in the studio as often. “... We just didn't want to go into a studio with roaches and homeless people sleeping in the hallways.”
That statement, however, is complicated by publicly available records. Data from New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development shows no reported complaints or violations tied to Hot 97’s building.
It is also worth noting that a transitional housing shelter operates nearby. The Bowery Residents' Committee’s Jack Ryan Residence is located just one block from the studio.
Even so, Laura’s remarks add another layer to a story that continues to evolve.
It may still be some time before the full reasons behind the cancellation of “Ebro In The Morning” become clear. Ebro himself has suggested that his outspoken progressive views and decisions by ownership played a role. “You look around at all the major media outlets, all of them, they all got to fold up 'cause they all trying to renew their deals and their licenses. We'll get into more specifics another time... Bro's a casino owner. You know those three licenses that they got here in New York City for the casinos? The guy that owns this sh*t owns one of the casino's licenses. He got to raise half a billion dollars.
“They need my sht-talking, anti-Netanyahu, anti-government, progressive sht out the way, bro,” Ebro added.
