Lupe Fiasco closes the "Samurai" era with five-song EP

Lupe Fiasco is wrapping up what might be remembered as one of the most overlooked stretches of his career this weekend. That period is the Samurai era, which first began in June 2024. Built around one of the more creative and abstract concepts in recent years, Lupe delivered a seamless eight-track project that showcased his artistry in full.

Even though the original album was already tight and focused, the Chicago rapper believed there was still room to expand on it. That led to the release of Samurai DX. Designed as a deluxe-style EP, Lupe gave fans an alternate way to experience a select group of songs from the initial project.

Among those reimagined tracks are “Samurai,” “Palaces,” and “Bigfoot,” each featuring singer and songwriter Troy Tyler, who had also opened for Lupe on his supporting tour. The veteran lyricist adjusted the production to complement Tyler’s style better, taking the songs in a smoother R&B direction. The result is a more accessible interpretation of the original cuts, with a focus on mood and rhythm.

These reworked versions highlight groove above all else, particularly noticeable on the second half of Samurai. To go along with them, Lupe also introduced two new tracks: the self-produced “SOS” and the opening cut “High Note,” which features Luv Moore.

Although the Lasers star continues to display razor-sharp lyricism, the overall feel of the EP remains relaxed and atmospheric. For listeners who may have found Samurai a bit too dense at first, this updated version offers a softer entry point that could inspire a fresh appreciation for the original album.
