Bono has shared an emotional tribute to Moya Brennan, describing the late Clannad frontwoman as “an angel” following her passing at the age of 73 on Monday (13.04.26).
The U2 singer had previously worked with Clannad on the song In a Lifetime and has long spoken about Moya’s remarkable voice.
Speaking with The Irish Independent after the news broke, the Irish artist said: “She walked through this world like an angel, and now she’s back with her own kind. We love you Moya.”
Andrea Corr also paid tribute to the singer, writing: “The most beautiful voice and spirit … A blessing to have had time with you. Dear Moya. Rest in peace. Praying for your beloved family and friends’ comfort.”
Former The Saturdays member Una Healy posted a photo with Moya and looked back on the moments they shared performing together.
She wrote: “Deeply saddened to hear of the loss of the wonderful Moya Brennan, Ireland’s first lady of Celtic music.
“I had the great pleasure of meeting and singing with Moya on a number of occasions … She was such a beautiful person and a legend.”
Moya, who was born Máire Ní Bhraonáin in Gaoth Dobhair on August 4 1952, went on to become one of Ireland’s most important musical voices as the lead singer of Clannad.
The band grew from playing in family pub sessions to achieving international success, combining traditional Irish sounds with modern musical elements.
They reached a major breakthrough in 1982 with Theme from Harry’s Game, becoming the first act to perform in Irish on Top of the Pops and receiving major honors including an Ivor Novello and a Grammy.
Over the course of more than 30 albums, Moya’s distinct and atmospheric vocals shaped Clannad’s signature sound as they worked on film and television projects and toured around the world.
Their last studio album, Nádúr, was released in 2013, and they later wrapped up their 50th anniversary In a Lifetime farewell tour in 2024.
Her sister Enya also started out with the group before going on to build a hugely successful solo career.
Moya had been living with the lung condition pulmonary fibrosis and passed away after a short illness.
