Drake sent the music world into chaos after unexpectedly releasing three new albums at the same time, sparking endless conversations about everything from his label status to the different sounds across each project. One person heavily connected to MAID OF HONOUR is producer Gordo, who recently spoke with Rolling Stone about the rollout and admitted even he did not know Drake planned to release three albums instead of two.
“I knew it was going to be two albums,” Gordo explained during a phone interview with the publication. “I didn’t know it was going to be three.”
The revelation shows just how secretive Drake kept the overall strategy, even among some of his closest collaborators. While Gordo clearly knew parts of the plan, it seems the Toronto superstar only shared information people absolutely needed to know. The producer formerly known as Carnage said he listened to all three albums once they officially arrived, and although he may have been slightly more prepared than fans, the final surprise still caught him off guard.
The comments also give fans a better understanding of Drake’s rollout approach, making the experience feel almost as exciting and unpredictable for collaborators behind the scenes as it was for listeners online.
Gordo played a major role throughout MAID OF HONOUR, earning production credits on tracks including “Hoe Phase,” “Road Trips,” “Outside Tweaking” featuring Stunna Sandy, “Amazing Shape” with Popcaan, “BBW,” “True Bestie” featuring Iconic Savvy, “New Bestie,” “Stuck,” and “Goose And The Juice.” He also contributed to “WNBA” from HABIBTI.
During the interview, Gordo spoke about Drake experimenting with more club inspired sounds throughout MAID OF HONOUR. According to him, the creative process lasted well over a year, with beats constantly being exchanged back and forth. He also praised Drake’s hands on approach in the studio, explaining that many songs evolved far beyond their original concepts once Drake began tweaking and reshaping the production.
Gordo also admitted he was surprised by some of the featured artists who appeared across the albums, including Sexyy Red’s appearance on “Cheetah Print.” As for what comes next, the producer plans to shift focus back toward his own solo material following his last album DIAMANTE, but he remains appreciative of everything the experience brought him.
“It’s been more than positive, right? So that’s a win right there,” Gordo told Rolling Stone. “That’s literally a win. I’m so, so proud of him. He worked so hard and I’m happy that I’m just a very, very small piece into his legacy.”
