mgk might have just put together the perfect soundtrack for summer road trips. His seventh studio album, Lost Americana, bursts with sunny melodies and lyrics about self-discovery and savoring the process. “Get in your car this weekend, start driving and press play; it’s time for Lost Americana,” the Cleveland-born rapper-turned-rocker shared on Instagram.
This album holds a deeper meaning for mgk, as it’s partly a tribute to his late close friend, Luke “The Dingo” Trembath. “Dedicating this album to our brother in the sky, Dingo. It’s the last piece of music he heard from us before he passed, and he’s been an honorary member of our band since day 1. Tonight’s release isn’t the same without a legendary christening from him, but his spirit is all over the project,” he wrote.
Beyond the personal dedication, the multi-talented artist calls Lost Americana a “love letter to the dreamers,” borrowing the phrase directly from Bob Dylan, who happens to be a huge supporter of mgk’s work.
This Americana-inspired project marks yet another chapter in mgk’s creative evolution. After moving away from hip-hop toward the end of the 2010s, he dove headfirst into a post-punk phase. Many critics weren’t exactly impressed with that chapter of his career.
But this latest transformation could be exactly what he needed. At 35, mgk is focusing on repairing his relationship with Megan Fox and reconnecting on a deeper level. He’s been through plenty of personal changes recently, and those experiences seem to have fueled what might be one of his strongest albums of the decade.
