Last month, Kevin Gates began the rollout for Luca Brasi 4, the first entry in his celebrated mixtape series since the third installment dropped in September 2018. The series played a big role in putting him on the radar back when he was still an up-and-coming artist, but after he became established, it went quiet. Now, he’s bringing it back with a fresh 19-track project.
Luca Brasi 4 runs just under 54 minutes and includes features from a range of artists. Hurricane Wisdom, a rising talent from Florida signed to Freebandz, goes back and forth with Gates on “Disappoint Me.” NoCap makes an appearance on “Dying Is Easy,” while G Herbo joins Gates for the first time on “Thuggin,” a track that delivers exactly the kind of hard-hitting energy you’d expect.
Gates also links up with fellow Baton Rouge native NBA YoungBoy on “I Am,” a smoother, more melodic track that stands apart from much of the rest of the tape.
For the most part, Luca Brasi 4 is close to an hour of Kevin Gates sharing gritty street narratives, though he still slips in softer, more vulnerable moments, just as he has throughout his career. Those moments don’t last long, though, tracks like “Look Like” see him dropping some of the most explicit lyrics to hit a rap song this year. The production stays polished throughout, and Gates sounds entirely at home over nearly every beat.
All in all, Luca Brasi 4 finds Kevin Gates operating firmly in his zone, making it a strong continuation of what had been an acclaimed trilogy of mixtapes. You can stream the full project below.
