Five years ago, Nicki Minaj lost her father, Robert Maraj, in a tragic hit and run incident. Following the case, Charles Polevich served time in jail. Not long after, Nicki’s mother, Carol Maraj, moved forward with a wrongful death lawsuit against him.
According to TMZ, the lawsuit has now been officially resolved. Court filings show that the agreement was finalized back in March of this year. Details around the financial terms have not been disclosed, though it is known that Carol Maraj was pursuing compensation tied to loss of companionship.
Polevich reportedly made the legal process difficult for the family along the way. At one point, he attempted to subpoena Nicki Minaj in hopes of getting her to sit for a deposition.
The intent behind that request was to analyze Nicki’s lyrics as a way to argue that her upbringing and her mother’s marriage were unhappy, which could have potentially reduced the damages owed. Ultimately, that deposition never happened, and the case still ended in a settlement.
This has been an incredibly difficult chapter for the Maraj family, as they navigated both the loss and the legal battle that followed. Polevich ultimately served one year in jail after being convicted on charges related to the hit and run as well as evidence tampering.
As of now, Nicki Minaj has not publicly spoken about the settlement outcome.
