Suki Waterhouse has spoken about the newfound independence she discovered after shifting her focus from modelling to music.

The British performer recently reflected on how her life evolved once she stepped away from modelling and began pursuing a career as a recording artist.

During a new conversation with Variety, Suki explained that this stage of her professional life has brought a level of control she had never previously experienced, saying that "it's the first time that I'm actually really the boss".

The "Supersad" singer, 34, acknowledged that making the transition required her to break away from many of the behaviours and expectations she had become accustomed to while working as a model.

"It takes a long time to get to a place where you have a bit more of a voice, especially in that industry," she said. "Being a young woman is f**king brutal. And then when you get older, you realise that no one really has any idea what they're doing."

Suki also praised the women in her circle, including Daisy Jones & The Six co stars Camila Morrone and Riley Keough, for helping her become more confident about speaking up and standing her ground.

"In contrast to my own Britishness, (they) have taught me that it's kind of great to be a little bit difficult," she told the publication. "It's actually just because you f**king care. Whenever anyone tells me that somebody's difficult, I'm like, 'Oh, I like them. Obviously.'"

Elsewhere in the interview, Suki revealed that although music remains her primary focus, she has not closed the door on taking on more acting roles in the future.

"The desire is still there completely," she stated. "It's really a thing of managing when. Because tours get booked up, and then trying to manage having a family at the same time."

Suki, who shares a two year old daughter with longtime partner Robert Pattinson, released her debut single in 2016. She is currently preparing for the release of her third studio album, Loveland, which is scheduled to arrive on July 10.
