Madonna’s spokesperson has dismissed claims that the singer was seated inside U.S. President Donald Trump’s private suite during Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final.
As Spain faced Argentina at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, television cameras showed Trump watching from the VIP box behind bulletproof glass alongside First Lady Melania Trump, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and several other guests.
The footage quickly spread online as viewers tried to identify the woman sitting behind Melania Trump. Some social media users believed the blonde woman wearing large sunglasses was Madonna, even though she has openly criticised Trump and was taking part in the halftime performance at the time.
A spokesperson for the Hung Up star told Rolling Stone that Madonna was not present in Trump’s World Cup suite.
Madonna launched the inaugural FIFA World Cup Halftime Show with her 2000 song Music, joined by a group of dancers and Brazilian football legends Ronaldinho and Ronaldo.
The 11 minute production also featured The Muppets performing The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army, BTS delivering Dynamite and Jason Sudeikis appearing as Ted Lasso. Justin Bieber performed a solo acoustic song before Shakira and Burna Boy presented their official World Cup track Dai Dai.
The event ended with curator Chris Martin and Coldplay performing their new song We Dance while surrounded by children from the PS22 Chorus.
Spain secured a 1 to 0 win over Argentina after extra time, earning their second World Cup title following their first victory in 2010.
