The Heartbreakers shared an emotional reunion on Wednesday night, 16 September 2026, when they appeared at the Americana Honors and Awards to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The occasion became their first performance since frontman Tom Petty died in 2017. It was also the first time the original members had played together in more than 20 years.
Founding musicians Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair welcomed country star Chris Stapleton for a three song tribute featuring several of Petty’s most beloved tracks. They began with ‘American Girl’, a song closely connected to the band’s history and Petty’s distinctive vocals.
Speaking to the crowd, Campbell recognised the emotional significance of the reunion.
He said: “It’s true, we haven’t played together since 2017, and it’s really emotional and sweet to be here. We have two more songs, and we’re so happy to have Chris up here with us. It’s great to see you all, I think you know this one.”
The musicians followed with ‘Breakdown’ from their self titled 1976 debut album. Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston, who both played important roles during the group’s later years, then joined them for the closing performance of ‘You Wreck Me’ from Petty’s 1994 solo record Wildflowers.
Before presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award, Stapleton spoke about the lasting impact Petty had on him and countless other listeners.
He said: “This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Words cannot express how much that catalog of music means to me, but also to the world. It transcends genre, it transcends Americana, it transcends lots of things. It heals and it makes you feel good and it makes you want to drive too fast. And it makes you want to play music. That’s what it did for me.”
Adria Petty accepted the honour for her late father and expressed her gratitude to Stapleton for helping reunite the band.
She said: “I don’t know if I could have seen anyone else play with the Heartbreakers and felt so much soul and trust in what he just did here tonight.”
Looking back on the painful death of his longtime bandmate, Campbell said: “We’ll probably be grieving until the last day I live. But I’m OK, and we’re OK, and he’s OK, and the music is alive thanks to you.”
