LAZER DIM 700 is proving he has real talent, but the 2025 XXL Freshman still needs time to bring everything together. The Georgia rapper shows flashes of potential on his new project GANGWAY, his second release of the year. Compared to Sins Aloud, this one feels like it offers more creative ideas, even if parts of it sound like they could be leftovers from Playboi Carti or Ken Carson.
That impression partly comes from his deep, muffled delivery, but it also stems from the pounding, distorted 808-heavy beats throughout the record. The 13 tracks are produced by names like F1LTHY and Lukrative, both of whom have worked closely with Carti’s Opium camp.
The influence of Playboi Carti is evident across the album. Not every artist following his lane is bound to break through, but LAZER DIM has enough raw talent to make us believe he could. At the same time, it’s easy to see why some fans haven’t been overly impressed, especially when songs like the bluntly titled Fart 808 come across as unfinished.
Even so, moments like that still hold redeeming qualities, such as the confident flow he puts down on the track. The next cut, boxhed, stands out with one of the best instrumentals on the project, fusing Carti’s influence with older Uzi vibes while leaning into a gritty lo-fi feel that actually works.
In the end, GANGWAY is a mixed listen, but LAZER DIM 700 is still at the beginning of his journey. As he sharpens his style and develops a more transparent sound, it feels likely he’ll justify that XXL Freshman nod. Until then, GANGWAY offers an early look at the kind of artist he’s becoming.
