Claudia Sheinbaum hinted on Thursday, May 7, that BTS could return to Mexico in 2027. The announcement followed the K-pop group’s historic visit to the National Palace, where the members stepped onto one of the balconies to greet nearly 50,000 fans gathered outside, according to official estimates.
During her regular morning press conference, Sheinbaum played a video showing herself alongside the seven BTS members inside one of the halls at the presidential palace.
“For all the BTS ARMY and all the young people in Mexico, I made them a proposal,” Sheinbaum said in Spanish during the clip. “Would you like to come back to Mexico next year?”
“Sí!” the members replied together.
The president added that more information regarding the possible return will be shared later, explaining that this meeting was only an initial step in discussions with the group.
Sheinbaum also thanked Lee Jae Myung for helping make the meeting possible, revealing that she plans to send him a formal letter of appreciation. According to the Mexican president, the diplomatic support from South Korea was essential in arranging the visit from RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook.
The group’s appearance at the presidential headquarters quickly became global news. Standing before a massive crowd gathered at the Zócalo, Mexico’s largest public square, BTS greeted fans in both Spanish and English, drawing emotional reactions from ARMY members, including cheers, tears and nonstop applause.
As part of their ongoing ARIRANG World Tour, BTS returned to Mexico City for three sold out concerts at GNP Seguros Stadium scheduled for May 7, May 9 and May 10. Promoter Ocesa reported that more than 136,000 tickets were sold across the three shows.
Sheinbaum has openly supported Mexican ARMY’s calls for more BTS performances after tickets for the concerts disappeared in under an hour. Earlier this year, she reportedly sent a request to the South Korean government asking for additional BTS shows in Mexico. Weeks later, she confirmed that the request had been forwarded to HYBE, the company behind the group.
BTS are currently touring in support of their album ARIRANG. The worldwide trek extends into 2027 and is currently expected to conclude on March 14 in Manila.
