Vera Blue has offered her own interpretation of an alternative rock classic, performing Radiohead’s “Creep” for triple j’s Like A Version.
The Australian singer songwriter transformed the 1992 recording into a simple arrangement featuring electric guitar, piano and her voice. She began in the deeper part of her vocal range before rising into a powerful falsetto during the chorus. Near the end, she introduced The Pipe, a synthesizer and dynamic effects processor from SOMA Laboratory that is controlled by the mouth, giving the performance an unsettling atmosphere.
Blue explained that the emotion behind the track inspired her choice. She called “Creep” an “epic rock song” with “heartbreaking” lyrics and wanted to create a “very haunting version” while still honoring Thom Yorke’s original recording.
During the same studio appearance, Blue played “Maze,” which will appear on her upcoming record Modern Rituals. The project arrives Friday, Aug. 21, through Island Records and Universal Music Australia. She will begin an Australian tour that evening at Brisbane’s Princess Theatre before completing the run at The Rechabite in Perth on Aug. 28.
Vera Blue was born Celia Pavey and initially gained attention as a folk musician and a finalist on The Voice Australia. She adopted the Vera Blue identity in 2016 and shifted her musical direction. Her 2017 record Perennial climbed to No. 6 on the ARIA Albums Chart, helped by the double platinum track “Regular Touch.” Her biggest chart achievement came from “Rushing Back,” her collaboration with Australian producer Flume, which rose to No. 12 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Modern Rituals will become her third Vera Blue studio project after Mercurial, released in 2022.
