Progressive rock legend Rick Wakeman delivered an outstanding performance at Tenerife’s Pirámide de Arona during Starmus VIII, where he premiered his ambitious new composition, Echoes from Black Holes. Blending sweeping classical arrangements with a compelling cosmic narrative, the world premiere enthralled an audience of leading scientists, astronomers and music fans.
The project originated with Starmus co-founder Garik Israelian, who imagined adapting a historic lecture on black holes by Professor Stephen Hawking into separate sections, accompanied by original music and striking visual projections. Drawing inspiration from Hawking’s theories, Wakeman developed the concept into a complete musical experience, weaving his powerful keyboard performances around recordings of Hawking’s voice to connect each movement.
When the final movement came to an end, the audience rose to its feet in a resounding ovation. Wakeman left the stage to thunderous applause, but the crowd’s continued enthusiasm brought the keyboard virtuoso back for a remarkable two-song encore.
For the evening’s finale, Wakeman showcased his extraordinary musical versatility with fresh interpretations of two Beatles classics, reworking them in the styles of celebrated classical composers. He began with Help!, reimagined as a romantic composition inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns, before turning Eleanor Rigby into a brooding, energetic arrangement influenced by the dramatic style of Sergei Prokofiev. Following his recent health challenges, the performance was particularly remarkable.
The remarkable show brought an unforgettable evening of music and science to a spectacular close.
